JJ Thomson Ave

JJ Thomson Ave runs in front of the William Gates Building, the Maxwell Centre and the future site of the Shared Facilities Hub and Cavendish III. This street is the subject of several planning applications, including Cavendish III and the West Cambridge outline planning application.

There are two bus stops on each side of the street, currently served by the Universal bus. During the day the peak service levels are 4 times per hour. In the future the frequency is expected to increase to 6 times per hour, and the University is seeking to have the Citi 4 divert at least 3 times per hour and serve these stops as well. That means that there will be 9 bus services per hour in each direction on JJ Thomson Ave, or one every 6-7 minutes. Also there is the possibility that rural bus services that rarely stop on JJ Thomson Ave today may have their frequency increased in the future. That could lead to having a bus arriving every few minutes, probably in clusters. This could be good for public transport service, but it will be a massive mess if many people are expected to cycle mixed with buses under such conditions.

West Cambridge outline planning application

  • As of October 2017 the segregated cycleway has been eliminated and people cycling are dumped back on the road with the buses and vans:

  • In 2016 this was the plan for JJ Thomson Ave, with segregated cycling separate from both the carriageway and the footway:
