Alan Blackwell is Reader in Interdisciplinary Design at the Cambridge Computer Laboratory, having prior qualifications in professional engineering, computing and experimental psychology. He has 12 years experience of designing industrial systems, electronic and software products. He has taught design courses and supervised postgraduate design research students in Computing, Architecture, Psychology, Languages, Music and Engineering. He is a fellow of Darwin College, and a director of Living East, the cultural consortium for the East of England.

He has taught design courses and supervised postgraduate design research students in Computing, Architecture, Psychology, Languages, Music and Engineering. His recent research activity has developed critical technical practice in relation to live coded performance, and the development of intelligent interactive systems. As director of Cambridge Global Challenges, he has a particular interest in equitable knowledge infrastructure -  the development of technologies compatible with indigenous knowledge and for use by low-income communities of the Global South. He is a fellow of Darwin College Cambridge and of the Royal Society of Arts, and has served as a Council member of the Cambridge Philosophical Society, and as a Director of Cambridge Enterprise.
