talks.cam is a pioneering initiative encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration through improved awareness of related research throughout Cambridge. (It includes, of course, a series of debates and seminars on interdisciplinary design).
We recommend talks.cam as a model of grass-roots system development, applying user-generated content approaches to bypass the institutional obstacles to cross-boundary working.
talks.cam was initially developed in PHP by Phil Cowans, then re-engineered by Tom Counsell using Ruby on Rails, and is now hosted by CARET. System design was carried out by David MacKay, Alan Blackwell, Mike Rose and Duncan Simpson.
The system is increasingly being deployed at other Universities, including Imperial College London, and Oxford University.
