Citizen science in the field

Can mobile phone hardware and applications be used as a tool for scientific research to take place in a scale and range of geographic locations beyond those available to professional researchers? There are many areas of science, such as ornithological conservation research, where the communities of amateurs and volunteers are substantially larger and more widely distributed than the professional research community. This project is exploring the extent to which commodity smartphone hardware can be turned into a productive scientific instrument allowing both data collection and analysis to be performed in the field.
