This was an early EPSRC Ideas Factory - an initiative to bring together researchers from a variety of disciplines around a common problem. This large-scale research programme was originally proposed by Crucible members at Aptivate. Alan Blackwell was appointed as Director of the ideas factory, coordinating over 1.5 million pounds of new research funding aimed at applications of ICT in rural and developing economies, resulting in four interdisciplinary research projects, together with a reflective coordinating network.

The resulting projects are documented on the BGDD site: http://www.bgdd.org/Wiki.jsp
