After finishing his design research PhD at CUMIS, Martyn became a research associate at Culture Lab Newcastle, where he worked on cultural and cognitive aspects of physically-anchored systems of spatial organisation. He was then appointed to a lectureship in architecture, also in Newcastle. He originally trained as an architect, and has a particular interest in participatory design prototyping, and in the application of architectural methods to the design and analysis of spatial hypertexts.
