On the basis of advice from Gillian Crampton-Smith, an attempt was made to establish a radical design-oriented syllabus that would be taught by Crucible members, commencing in the first year of the Cambridge Computer Science Tripos under the title Design, Theory and Society.
Projects and Crucible members engaged in this theme include:

- Humanities Computing for Languages (CHUCOL)
- Online aerospace clubs
- Joint Urban Design Studio
- Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment
- Design, Theory and Society
