JJ Thomson Ave runs in front of the William Gates Building, the Maxwell Centre and the future site of the Shared Facilities Hub and [[Cavendish III]. This street is the subject of several planning applications, including Cavendish III and the West Cambridge outline planning application.

There are two bus stops on each side of the street, currently served by the Universal bus. During the day the peak service levels are 4 times per hour. In the future the frequency is expected to increase to 6 times per hour, and the University is seeking to have the Citi 4 divert at least 3 times per hour and serve these stops as well. That means that there will be 9 bus services per hour in each direction on JJ Thomson Ave, or one every 6-7 minutes.
