Chicane

A sharp bend in a path intended to slow cyclists but usually just ends up creating conflict between path users, a barrier for people with disabilities, and eventually causes crashes due to people slipping and falling or bikes with trailers not being able to make the sharp turn.

The West Cambridge and Northwest Cambridge sites have a number of dangerous chicanes that were installed years ago and still have not been removed. That the University Estate Management refuses to remove these hazards and install infrastructure that is respectful of people cycling remains an ongoing sore point.

A dangerous chicane at the end of the Coton Path, where you can see a man using a handcycle is unable to navigate the sharp bend without crossing over to the 'wrong side', and the wall itself has been struck so many times in collisions that it is almost falling over.
One of several chicanes on the Ridgeway so-called premier cycle route that make life much more difficult for people trying to use it.
